Mission Road Streetscape Improvements

In the South San Francisco Transit Village Plan, streets were identified as the "backbone" of the Transit Village. The type and amount of traffic that moves in and through the Transit Village, and its behavior as it relates to the pedestrian is key in determinint whether or not the Transit Village can be a truly vital pedestrian-oriented center.

Mission Road is the "front door" to the new South San Francisco BART station. Its scale, character, and location creates the strongest connection for local traffic and for pedestrians between the surrounding community and BART. It serves as a direct pedestrian connection between the adjacent residential neighborhood of Sunshine Gardens and the station, as well as the direct vehicular connection between downtown South San Francisco's main street–Grand Avenue–to the Transit Village.

The segment of Mission Road recommended for these improvements extends from McLellan Drive to Grand Avenue and includes;

• the widening of sidewalks to at least ten feet on both sides of the street, and the narrowing of the street to forty feet curb-to-curb;
• improvements at two SamTrans bus stops;
• pedestrian-scale lighting, landscaping, and furnishings in key locations;
• neighborhood gateway entries at all intersections with Mission Road;
• traffic calming devices at two key locations in the Sunshine Gardens neighborhood, adjacent to Mission Road; and
• a major gateway intersection at Mission Road and Grand Avenue.
