The Urban Transit Corridor Plan
Houston, TX

In June 2006, the City of Houston launched 'The Urban Transit Corridors Plan', an initiative to identify the community’s vision for neighborhoods along existing and proposed transit corridors. Houston leaders saw the opportunity to take advantage of the $2B investment in transit that METRO will be making during the next 10 years and use that investment to spur a new wave of neighborhood and commercial development.  Instead of going the traditional route of waiting for building projects to come their way, the City decided to take a pro-active role, giving a voice to citizens early on and putting in place plans that define a clear vision for the future.  The power and authority to plan has always resided at the City, but this is the first time it is being exercised on such a broad scale.  The Plan’s goal is to define a future for Houston where neighborhoods and transit fit together to create a livable and economically strong city.
