The inaugural LOST Competition was a big success. We had a great time with the program and look forward to running the competition again next year. Congratulations to the winners and all those who participated. The entries were on display at the 3A Gallery the first week of September as part of the Architecture & the City Festival and at VMWP's 20th year anniversary party, where the winners were announced. A donation has been made from the proceeds to the Center for Architecture+ Design.
2009 Winners!
BEST LOSER
Perkins + Will Inc.
Jurong General and Community Hospital
" It's too bad it didn't get built"
“For the inherent quality of the proposed design, and for the weary honesty about the aspects of a competition that don’t appear on the presentation boards: lost sleep, sexual dysfunction and computers that crash.” - jury
RUNNER UP
WRT Solomon E.T.C.
UCSF Mission Bay
“For the sense of “what if?” on a local scale, UCSF Mission Bay as a tightly defined campus oriented to the downtown skyline, not in on itself.” - jury
RUNNER UP
Bionic
Spike

“For sheer entertainment value, putting on full display what architects really think about their would-be clients as the honeymoon fades.” - jury
HONORABLE MENTION
BAR Architects
UC Davis Brewery, Winery & Food Pilot Facilities

“With its dignified clarity and vernacular snap, this is the sort of design that real people love – and competition juries almost inevitably ignore.” - jury
HONORABLE MENTION
Christopher Pizzi
Harvest Courtyard

“The courtyard layout looks good, but we were most impressed by the entry’s mordant wit – right down to the confession that it was submitted a full year late.” - jury
Selection
The Jury selected the best and brightest losers in a blind selection process. Winners were based on the creativity of the design, the best narrative argument, and the biggest laugh. A grand winner, two runner ups and two honorable mentions were awarded at the jury's discretion.
