Project Architect

Van Meter Williams Pollack is an award-winning multi-disciplinary architecture and urban
 design firm with offices in San Francisco and Denver. We are an open and progressive office
 with a variety of challenging projects. Van Meter Williams Pollack’s architectural work focuses on community development including mixed-use, multi-family, and affordable housing projects. Our urban design work includes Transit-Oriented Design, master planning and specific plans, and design guidelines.

The Project Architect will supervise projects through conceptual design, the entitlement and permitting process to production of contract documents, and construction. Candidates must work well within a team and individually in an interactive studio environment.

Multifamily housing and mixed use experience is desired, with two years in similar capacity. Strong graphic skills and competency in the following software programs are encouraged: Sketch Up, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign. Excellent CAD/BIM production skills are required and ArchiCAD experience is a strong preference.

The project architect position requires an architectural degree, a California Architectural License and 7-10 years of professional architectural experience. Salary is dependent on experience.

Job Title:              Senior Urban Designer 2019-SFSUD-07

Job Location:      San Francisco, CA

Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Urban Design leader, assist and participate in a wide range of small and large scale projects in master planning and urban design, including mixed use, residential, urban resilience, brownfield redevelopment and transit-oriented development projects; participate in all phases of design projects, including design competitions requiring expedited concept development and document production, conceptual master planning and design, schematic design and design development; facilitate visioning and goal setting session, develop an understanding of the perceptions and aspirations of the client, stakeholders and the broader community, determine planning and urban design principles; analyze physical and environmental features of a site and develop site analysis studies using data-driven visualization tools, requiring regional analysis, surrounding land use pattern study, environmental study, transportation system and connectivity analysis, figure-ground study, topographic feature analysis, urban form and frontage study; identify the site opportunities and constraints, and make conclusions and recommendations for design and development; analyze sketches, photographs, topography maps, aerial maps, notes, and site survey of existing conditions and other input material to determine best land use development strategies; research local/global precedents to apply to the design process; research zoning and building codes for compliance and building typologies; conduct feasibility studies, prepare program area tabulation, determine phasing, estimate population projection, apply local population assumption ratios for various regions; prepare analysis drawings, Illustrative conceptual and schematic design drawings including slope analysis drawings, conceptual diagrams and plans, development plans, entitlement plans, access and circulation plans, land use plans, grading plans, planting plans, drainage plans and open space plans; coordinate with consultants to incorporate demographic and economic data into planning and design process; coordinate information, deliverables, and other input with client representatives for project approvals;analyze and develop design concept of buildings and spaces using freehand sketching including pencil, ink, color pencil, and markers; prepare 2D/3D exhibits for presentations, reports and documentations, including plans, elevations, sections and perspective view renderings, using 2D/3D software including Revit BIM software, ArchiCAD, ArcGIS, SketchUp, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign; analyze design concept of land use, masterplan, buildings and spaces in 2D/3D and test against program or functional constraints and check for design compliance, including incorporating LEED sustainable design principles, using Revit Building Information Modeling (BIM), ArchiCAD, PhotoShop, Illustrator and InDesign; build physical models using 3D Printing technology; produce photorealistic digital renderings, using software such as Lumion; collaborate and coordinate with professional rendering consultants to produce photorealistic digital renderings and water color renderings; incorporate LEED sustainable design principles for master planning and urban design, assist in establishing LEED sustainable design criteria and calculate LEED Building Design and Construction (LEED-BD+C) points using LEED Calculator and Scorecard; integrate innovative sustainable design strategies into project work at the planning and building level and in specific site design to enhance the urban resiliency; use Best Management Practices and Low-Impact Design to mitigate development impacts; analyze climate data, solar orientation to identify passive design potentials based on the local climate and building use to minimize building energy needs and maximize energy savings; participate in meetings, workshops and on-site charrettes with clients and consultants; present the design concepts and design development at various stages of the project to the clients and public; coordinate with traffic, transit, transportation, civil engineering, entertainment, landscape, code, security, parking, lighting, zoning, signage, marketing/branding, historic preservation and adaptive reuse and waste management consultants to incorporate multidisciplinary expertise and engineering systems into unified design for client and agency review and approval; prepare design guidelines for corporations and cities and establish design standards to apply on projects locally, regionally and globally; represent the firm to present proposals, scope of work, and obtain approvals from clients; create and prepare design presentations to clients and agencies with jurisdiction over projects and coordinate approvals; develop and improve methods and processes for services and practice; coordinate project data and transmission and all electronic communications utilizing project information management software, including TeamWorks; assist the staffing manager in establishing task schedule and manpower requirements consistent with the project agreement; assist in identifying weekly project requirements and projecting long term needs; assist in identifying and quantifying tasks outside the scope of the Owner-Architect agreement for negotiation of additional services; assist with project consultant agreements and project budgets; assist with reviewing and approving consultant payments.

Job Requirements:
