The St. Helena City Council is committing $2.2 million toward a 40-unit affordable housing project.
Two nonprofits, Our Town St. Helena and Burbank Housing, are teaming up to build the Fountain Street project east of Highway 29 across from Vintage Hall. City officials approved the project in October.
The project’s cost is estimated at $27 million, excluding the land, which was donated by the Phelps family. The city has $1.5 million available in its two affordable housing funds. The council agreed to commit the $1.5 million to the Fountain Street project in an early phase of the project, plus another $700,000 later pending future revenue.
The commitment will help the developers compete for matching funds.
Fountain Street will be St. Helena’s biggest affordable housing project since the Stonebridge and Hunt’s Grove apartments were built in the early 1990s. If the developers can work out the financing, construction could begin in the spring or summer of 2027 and end in late 2028.
